The Parkland School District Veterans Memorial Elementary School project received an award for Education Projects less than $50 million. The Mount Nittany Health Cardiovascular Pavilion project received an award for Healthcare Projects less than $50 million.

Alvin H. Butz, Inc. was the construction manager for the Parkland School District Veterans Memorial Elementary School project and the architect was KBCA Architects.

The 88,000 square foot new elementary school has a capacity of 700 students and is constructed on a scenic 18-acre site. The school was designed to incorporate high-efficiency systems.

Some features of the facility included:

  • Two wings of classrooms, learning support and group instruction rooms
  • Main Interactive Literacy Center with two smaller literacy centers in each wing
  • STEM learning commons with maker space
  • Technology Center including a TV studio
  • Secure courtyard
"Through dedication and team collaboration, this challenging project was successfully delivered within budget and schedule, while fully meeting the needs of the School District, staff and students," said Greg L. Butz, President and CEO of Alvin H. Butz, Inc. "Having this project recognized at a national level is truly an achievement for the entire project team."

Alexander Building Construction Co. was the construction manager and JPT Architects was the architect for the Mount Nittany Health Cardiovascular Pavilion project.

The project consisted of a 26,381 square foot addition and overbuild above a fully occupied emergency room. There was a partial demolition of the existing building systems with extension of existing steel framing for the new addition. The project added two new stair towers, a new elevator and a connection to the existing elevator that serves the existing Emergency Department and rooftop heliport.

A few features of the project included:

"We value our long working relationship with Mount Nittany and are excited to receive an award for the Cardiovascular Pavilion project," said Doug Workman, General Manager of Alexander's State College office. "The utilization of Lean practices and technology on this project was a major factor in the successful completion of this facility."

The CMAA annual awards program serves to recognize excellence in the construction management field. CMAA judges look for examples of the successful application of construction management principles and standards.

The addition of the 2020 awards marks nine CMAA National Project Achievement awards received by a Butz Family Company.

A virtual awards presentation was held on Friday, October 16 to recognize this year's CMAA award winners.
