Shoemaker Construction Co., part of The Butz Family of Companies, participated in the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce's 13th Annual Read to Me Early Literacy Storyteller Event benefiting Philadelphia schools.
The Storyteller event is part of the annual Read to Me Early Literacy Program, which provides classroom book collections to thousands of students. The program inspires children to read with their parents, caregivers and teachers. It also provides teacher orientations to train educators on how to effectively utilize the program in their classrooms and encourage family members to read to their children at home. The Butz Family of Companies Participates in the National Safety Stand-Down To Prevent Falls in Construction
To coincide with OSHA's National Stand-down to Prevent Falls in Construction week, the Butz Family of Companies held safety stand-downs at multiple project jobsites last week. Led by our Safety Directors, project teams, including superintendents, foremen, managers, and subcontractors, participated in voluntary safety meetings which focused on fall hazards and the many ways workers can take actively take the necessary steps to eliminate falling risks inside the work zone. Shoemaker Skanska Joint Venture Signs OSHA Partnership at Fashion Outlets Philadelphia
The joint venture of Shoemaker Construction Co. and Skanska USA and the Philadelphia Area Office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have announced a strategic partnership during construction of Fashion Outlets Philadelphia. OSHA's Strategic Partnership Program helps encourage, assist and recognize voluntary partner efforts to eliminate serious workplace hazards.
A signing ceremony was held May 4th to coincide with Safety Week, a weeklong celebration of the construction industry's ongoing commitment to an injury free workplace.

Shoemaker Construction Co. hires new team members
Shoemaker Construction Co., as part of The Butz Family of Companies, is pleased to announce the hiring of Andrew Dougherty as a superintendent, and Cole Smith as a quantity surveyor.
Dougherty attended Drexel University with a Concentration in Architectural Design and a Minor in Construction Management. He has more than 40 years of progressive construction industry experience, with a strong track record of discovering potential obstacles early in a project as well as saving clients time and money. He is a certified Safety Officer, Green Advantage certified and has earned both OSHA 10 and 30 certifications.
Smith will graduate from Gwynedd Mercy University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting and Finance. He is actively involved in many leadership activities and organizations and is a member of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA). Read the full press release.

Shoemaker Construction Co., as part of The Butz Family of Companies, is pleased to announce the hiring of Michael Gavaghan as a site safety manager.
Gavaghan is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Safety & Health from Columbia Southern University and is First Aid and CPR certified. He brings more than 15 years of professional safety experience gained in the United States Air Force to the project team and is currently actively flying in the United States Air Force Reserves. Shoemaker Skanska Joint Venture Has Begun Extensive Renovation of Center City Philadelphia's Gallery Mall
Shoemaker Construction Co. and Skanska USA begin dramatic remake of 1.4 million square feet of prime retail and commercial space.
The joint venture of Skanska USA Building and Shoemaker Construction Company will complete renovations of The Gallery shopping mall in Center City Philadelphia. Owned and operated by Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust (PREIT) and Macerich, The Gallery is the single largest retail repositioning project in the Philadelphia region.
The work completed to date has included preliminary renovations including interior demolition, completed earlier this year. Read the full press release.
Shoemaker Construction Co. Hires New Team Members
Shoemaker Construction Co., as part of The Butz Family of Companies, is pleased to announce the hiring of Douglas Johansen as a project manager, and John Miner and Bret Cardinal as project superintendents.
Johansen received a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from the Newark College of Engineering. He has more than 40 years of construction industry experience. As project manager, he will work with preconstruction services staff and the design team to develop the project schedule, construction plan, and project phasing. He will be responsible for managing and directing the work of the specialty contractors and personnel, ensuring the overall successful completion of their assigned projects and achieving client satisfaction.
Miner brings more than 20 years of progressive construction experience to the project team. He is a certified Construction Supervisor and has earned Construction Management, Green Advantage and OSHA 30 certificates.
Cardinal has significant construction experience in the healthcare and higher education markets. He has certifications in OSHA 30, ICRA Bloodborne Pathogens, First Aid/CPR and Green Advantage. Read the full press release.
Shoemaker/Synterra, a JV Awarded the Philadelphia Housing Authority Headquarters Project
The joint venture of Shoemaker Construction Co. and Synterra, Ltd., was recently awarded the design and construction of the Philadelphia Housing Authority's (PHA) new Headquarters at Ridge Avenue in Philadelphia, PA.
PHA will consolidate its offices into one central Headquarters facility bringing all public and administrative functions together in a Class A office building. A division of the Philadelphia Police force will also occupy space in the building.
The PHA Headquarters will be located at Ridge and Jefferson Streets in Philadelphia, and will feature a 136,000 square foot, five-story office building and adjacent surface parking lot. The building will be clad in glass and stone with three exterior, open plaza areas. The project is designed for LEED® certification.

Slawski has a Bachelor of Architecture degree with a Minor in Construction from Philadelphia University. León earned a Master of Architecture degree fromWashington University and a Bachelor of Environmental Design degree from the University of Puerto Rico. As project managers, Slawski and León will work with preconstruction services staff and the design team to developthe project schedule, construction plan, and project phasing.

Alvin H. Butz, Inc., a Butz Family Company, is pleased to announce the hiring of Steven Butz as a Project Engineer. He is the son of Greg L. Butz, President and CEO of Alvin H. Butz, Inc.
Steven joins Mike Butz, Greg's oldest son, as a member of the 6th generation of Butz builders. Mike has served as an Assistant Project Manager since 2011.

Shoemaker/Synterra, a JV Awarded Major Construction Project for Philadelphia Housing Authority
The joint venture of Shoemaker Construction Co. and Synterra, Ltd., was recently awarded the design and construction of 89 new apartments for the Philadelphia Housing Authority in Philadelphia, PA.
The $29,776,045 project, which will be located in North Central Philadelphia, will feature a variety of two- and three-story townhouses as well as multi-family flats for seniors and family tenants.

When it comes to managing construction projects, safety is our #1 priority. This week, our construction crews took part in the National Fall Prevention Stand-Down - an OSHA-supported initiative dedicated to raising awareness about the risks of falling and how to prevent any accidents. Led by our Safety Directors, we had our project teams take a break from the construction project in order to participate in voluntary safety meetings. During these meetings, we focused on "Fall Hazards" and ways to eliminate falling risks inside the work zone. Ultimately, we hope to do our part in raising awareness to decrease the hundreds of preventable fall-related fatalities that occur each year in the United States.View all images.

Shoemaker Construction Co. Completes Expansion of Villanova University's Saint Augustine Center Garage
Shoemaker Construction Co., a Butz Family Company, recently completed an expansion of the Saint Augustine Center parking garage at Villanova University.
The project consisted of a two-story overbuild addition to the existing Saint Augustine Center (SAC) garage for a total of 170,019 square feet. Creating an additional 223 parking spaces, the expansion nearly doubled the amount of parking currently available. Read the full press release.
