Shoemaker Construction Co. Completes Total Replacement of Temple University Hospital East Parking Garage

Shoemaker Construction Co., a Butz Family Company, recently completed the construction of a new parking garage at Temple University Hospital.

Totaling more than $18,000,000 and 225,000 square-feet, the garage is a total replacement of the old Ontario East Parking Garage located on the same site immediately adjacent to the Main Hospital. Read the full press release.

Shoemaker Construction Co. Completes Restorations to Iconic Amtrak Station

Shoemaker Construction Co. recently completed major renovations to Amtrak's 30th Street Station. The iconic Philadelphia landmark received renovations to its West Plaza and North Parking Deck.

Totaling 335,000 square-feet, renovations were ongoing for more than two years and included the station's west plaza, basement, parking and street levels. Read the full press release.

Shoemaker Project Executive Selected to Serve on CLC Steering Committee

Maura Hesdon, Project Executive for Shoemaker Construction Co., was recently selected to serve on the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) Steering Committee for the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). Her tenure on the committee will go through 2018.

The goal of the CLC is to provide a forum in which their members can network, exchange ideas and promote both personal and professional development within the construction industry.

Maura has 16 years of experience in the construction management industry, all of which have been with Shoemaker. She was recently promoted to the role of Project Executive, where she is tasked with providing executive management oversight through all phases of work. She also maintains client relations and fosters strong relationships between Shoemaker's staff and the project owners and design teams.

Aside from her work at Shoemaker, Maura is also one the founders of MAGIC (Mentoring a Girl in Construction) camp in Philadelphia and continues to be an integral part of the annual event. She also served on the National Board of Directors for the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) and is a past President of the Philadelphia Chapter 145.

Shoemaker Construction Co. Hires New Project Manager

The Butz Shoemaker Construction Co., as part of The Butz Family of Companies, is pleased to announce the hiring of Laurence (Larry) Temple II as a project manager. Temple will be responsible for the day-to-day management of various Shoemaker projects.

"Larry will look to uphold Shoemaker's reputation as he begins work with us," said Maura Hesdon, Project Executive for Shoemaker. "I am confident that he will provide unique insight and understanding into the projects he helps manage."

The Butz Family of Companies, consisting of Alexander Building Construction Co., Alvin H. Butz, Inc. and Shoemaker Construction Co., earned a spot on Engineering News-Record's (ENR) Top 400 Contractors List and Top 100 CM-at-Risk Firms in 2015. This year, the firm ranked #219 on the Top 400 Contractors list, showing remarkable consistency after having ranked #209 last year. They also ranked #99 on the Top 100 CM-at-Risk list. Shoemaker Construction Co. Hires New Estimator

Shoemaker Construction Co. is pleased to announce the hiring of Scott March as an estimator. March will be responsible for providing estimating services on both bid and negotiated projects for the company.

Butz Family of Companies Earns Spot on ENR's Top Contractors in General Building List

The Butz Family of Companies, consisting of Alexander Building Construction Co., Alvin H. Butz, Inc., and Shoemaker Construction Co., earned a spot on Engineering News-Record's (ENR) 2014 Top 400 Sourcebook list of the Top Contractors in General Building for their work on sports-related construction projects. They placed sixth on the list.

The construction management entity also ranked #209 on ENR's list of the Top 400 Contractors and #84 on the Top 100 Construction Management-at-Risk Firms in 2014.

"In addition to our expertise in the education, healthcare, parking garages and corporate office markets, this ranking demonstrates we can effectively translate construction management experience and knowledge across a multitude of fields including the sports industry," says Greg L. Shoemaker Construction Co. Poised for Future Growth with New Leadership

Shoemaker Construction Co., a member of The Butz Family of Companies, announces leadership changes that will position the firm for continued growth and success in the Delaware Valley region. Roger Ball, who served as President of Shoemaker since 2009, has resigned his position to pursue new interests.

Roger guided Shoemaker through some challenging economic times and improved the company's profitability the past several years. Under Roger's leadership, Shoemaker strengthened client relationships and increased repeat business. Tom has more than 30 years of business development experience working primarily in Central and Eastern Pennsylvania. Butz, Inc., Shoemaker Construction Co. and Alexander Building Construction Co., Tom develops and maintains relationships with key decision makers at leading colleges and universities, hospitals and health systems, corporations and large not-for-profit organizations. The Butz Family of Companies, consisting of Alexander Building Construction Co., Alvin H. Butz, Inc. and Shoemaker Construction Co., earned an improved ranking on Engineering News-Record's (ENR) list of the Top 400 Contractors in 2014. This year, the firm ranked #209, besting last year's ranking of #270. It is the third straight year in which the parent company has improved its ranking and remains the only firm headquartered in the Lehigh Valley to ever be ranked.

The construction management entity enjoyed a 42% increase in total revenue from 2012, marking this the fourth year that they have enjoyed such an increase.

NAWIC Completes Camp for Young Women in Construction Industry

The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Philadelphia Chapter recently sponsored an educational camp for high school girls which took place from April 14 to April 18. Titled the Mentoring a Girl in Construction (MAGIC) Camp, its purpose is to help promote NAWIC's mission of enhancing the success of women in the construction industry.

"The camp's aim is to introduce girls to the opportunity of future training in a skilled trade, a career path which they may not otherwise be exposed to," said Maura Hesdon, a senior project manager at Shoemaker Construction Co. and co-founder of the Philadelphia MAGIC camp.

Originally created by two women in Georgia in 2008, this year's Philadelphia MAGIC Camp included 10 inner-city high school girls and took place at a different Building Trades Apprenticeship Center each day. While at camp, the girls learned hands-on the basic skills of the steamfitters, bricklayers, tile setters, carpenters, painters, tapers, and glaziers trades while also developing greater self-confidence. Shoemaker/Synterra Wins Award for work on Norris Apartments

Shoemaker Construction Co. and Synterra Ltd. recently received the Construction Excellence award for Best Green Building Project from the General Building Contractors Association (GBCA).

The project team won the award for their work on Philadelphia Housing Authority's Norris Apartments.

Norris Apartments represents the Philadelphia Housing Authority's first ever LEED© development, applying nationally accepted standards for the planning, design, construction, and operation of high-performance green buildings. LEED© Gold certification was achieved on all four of the buildings. Read the full press release.

Shoemaker Construction Co. Completes Renovations to Hope Partnership for Education in Philadelphia

Shoemaker Construction Co. recently completed renovations to the new Hope Partnership for Education middle school in North Philadelphia.

The 28,869-square foot, two-story building, located at 11th and Huntingdon Streets, was originally a Salvation Army Community Center. The new school and education center houses classrooms for grades 5-8, a gymnasium, cafeteria, multi-purpose room, adult education area, teacher's lounge and faculty offices.

Butz Family of Companies Hires New Employee, Improves Technology Capabilities

The Butz Family of Companies, consisting of Alvin H. Butz, Inc., Alexander Building Construction Co. and Shoemaker Construction Co., has hired Steve Kneski as a Virtual Design & Construction Modeler. Kneski will be responsible for using Building Information Modeling (BIM) and other technologies to help provide current and potential clients with more detailed representations of their projects.

The Butz Family of Companies Hires Virtual Construction Coordinator / Project Engineer

The Butz Family of Companies, consisting of Alvin H. Butz, Inc., Alexander Building Construction Co. and Shoemaker Construction Co., has hired Daniel Weiger as a Virtual Construction Coordinator and Project Engineer. In his role as Virtual Construction Coordinator, Weiger will train and educate employees of The Butz Family of Companies on the emerging trends and management techniques associated with Project Level Building Information Modeling (BIM). As Project Engineer, Weiger is responsible for checking, tracking and monitoring shop drawings and submittals, tracking RFI's, updating construction schedules and facilitating trade contractor coordination meetings. Butz Family of Companies' Employee Recognized by ENR Mid-Atlantic as Top 20 Under 40 for 2013

The Butz Family of Companies, consisting of Alvin H. Shoemaker/Perryman Completes LEAP Academy STEM School

Shoemaker Construction Co., in a joint venture with Perryman Building and Construction Services, Inc., recently completed the LEAP (Leadership, Education, and Partnership) Academy STEM Campus Addition in Camden, NJ. The specialized STEM High School program focuses on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Shoemaker/Perryman to Build 683-Space Parking Garage at Philadelphia Zoo

The Centennial District Intermodal Transportation Center Project is underway with a joint venture between area companies to construct the much-anticipated parking garage.

The Philadelphia Zoo announced that Shoemaker/ Perryman, a Joint Venture will build the much-anticipated parking garage to be completed inspring 2013. The garage is part of the Centennial District Intermodal Transportation Center which will increase parking capacity and improve traffic, safety, stormwater management and aesthetics in the area. Shoemaker Construction Co. Awarded Renovation at Amtrak's 30th Street Station

Shoemaker Construction Co., a member of the Butz Family of Companies, has been selected to renovate the West Plaza and Parking Deck at Amtrak's 30th Street Station. Features of this project include demolition, waterproofing, structural repairs and replacement and painting of exposed steel structure.

Shoemaker/Synterra Completes Norris Apartments Construction

Shoemaker Synterra J.V. recently completed the new Norris Apartments located in North Philadelphia. In a Joint Venture, Shoemaker Construction Co. and Synterra Ltd. worked with the Philadelphia Housing Authority in redeveloping the Norris Apartments building site into an environmentally-friendly, rental community.

"I am extremely proud of the dedication and attention to detail our skilled project team put into making this redevelopment a success," says Roger Ball, President of Shoemaker Construction Co.

The newly constructed building includes 51 walk-ups and townhomes consisting of 14 one-bedroom units, 23 two-bedroom units and 14 three-bedroom units. For the convenience of its occupants, the building also includes a management office and laundry. Read the full press release.

Shoemaker Announces John Miner Completes Supervisory Training Program

Shoemaker Construction Co. announces John Miner has completed the Supervisory Training Program (STP) offered jointly by the Carpenters and the General Building Contractors Association (GBCA)/Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). GBCA is the Philadelphia chapter of the AGC headquartered in Arlington, VA.

Miner is a Superintendent for Shoemaker with 16 years of progressive construction experience. He is responsible for directing the foremen and field operations of the various specialty contractors on the site. His duties include quality control, coordination of job site construction activities, interfacing with the site facilities personnel, coordination with the Owner's vendors, daily inspections, and adherence to project schedules.

National Association of Women in Construction Region 1 Forum to be Hosted in Philadelphia

Maura Hesdon, Regional Director of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), Region 1, and a Senior Project Manager with Shoemaker Construction Co. will host the 52nd Annual Regional Forum April 27-28, 2012 in the Loews Philadelphia Hotel.

The Region 1 Forum is held twice a year in various locations across the Region 1 coverage area including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, New York, Connecticut and Washington DC. The April Forum, titled "Declare your Independence!" will feature educational sessions on topics ranging from Managing the Generation Gap and Dealing with Contract language across state borders to Strategic and Succession Planning. An update on the MAGIC camp program will also be given. MAGIC (Mentoring a Girl In Construction) Camp is a free, week-long day camp for junior and senior high school girls to introduce them to a potential career in the construction industry. Many young girls are unaware of the possibility of a rewarding and financially beneficial career in the construction trades or related fields. The Butz Family of Companies Announces New Positions

The Butz Family of Companies, consisting of Alvin H. Butz, Inc., Alexander Building Construction Co. and Shoemaker Construction Co., announces two new positions in a coordinated effort to improve strategic initiatives and business development efforts in core markets.

Christopher S. Magent, PhD, LEED AP, will fill a newly created position, Business Development and Strategic Initiatives Director. He will lead the integration of the business development and marketing efforts of all three companies. Magent is currently the General Manager of Alexander's office in State College, and he will continue overseeing the operations of that office. During his tenure with Alexander, Magent has led efforts that have increased market share each year while delivering excellent service to all clients in the State College region.

Reporting to Magent will be Thomas E. Donley in the role of Business Development Manager for South Central and Eastern PA.  Currently a resident of York, Donley is a native of Allentown with nearly 30 years of professional business development experience across Central and Eastern Pennsylvania.  Donley served most recently as President of the York County Chamber of Commerce for 25 years, and earlier in his career worked for the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and practiced law in Philadelphia.  In addition to Donley’s 100% focus on business development and lead generation, he will continue to leverage the talents of the staffs in all three companies in retaining and gaining customers. Shoemaker Construction Co. Completes Construction at KIPP Philadelphia Elementary Academy

Shoemaker Construction Co. completes construction at KIPP Philadelphia Elementary Academy on schedule and celebrated the grand opening at a ribbon cutting with tennis great Andre Agassi on January 25.

Shoemaker transformed the 2-story, 30,000 square foot abandoned factory and warehouse at 2409 West Westmoreland Street in North Philadelphia into a charter school with 9 classrooms, a multipurpose room that doubles as a cafeteria and gymnasium, kitchen facilities, and administrative offices.

Work was phased so that the school could open in August 2011 with limited enrollment on the ground floor. Construction crews completed the initial phase in only six weeks. Phase I involved interior demolition of both floors and fit-out of the entire first floor. Work on the pground floor included new partitions, floors, ceilings, and mechanical/electrical systems for 9 classrooms, administrative offices, toilet rooms, an elevator, and support space.
